Daddy Longlegs Vs Man O’ War

A sea voyage on wheels at Brighton.

This unique coastline railway was designed by Magnus Volk (Volks Electric Railway) Which ran through the shallow coastal waters of the English Channel between 1896 and 1901..

Officially named ‘Pioneer’, but many called it ‘Daddy Longlegs’.

This popular transport carried tens of thousands of passengers in its time but was ultimately abandoned to make room for new sea defences and Volk was unable to raise funds to construct a replacement.

Ian decided to combine this unique invention from the past with a recent news story from the 4th March 2022 warning of Portuguese Man O’ Wars washing up on Brighton beaches. Thus creating this vintage style B-movie painting.

This original painting is available to buy at Jules Emporium Brighton, along with a run of 50 limited edition giclee prints, 40cm x 30 cm, signed by the artist. Printed on Hahnemuhle textured fine art paper (German etch) 310gsm
