“And we danced, on the brink of an unknown future, to an echo from a vanished past”
When a freak cosmic event renders most of the earth’s population blind, Bill Masen is one of the lucky few to retain his sight. The places he walks are crammed with groups of men and women needing help, some ready to prey on those who can still see. But another menace stalks blind and sighted alike. With nobody to stop their spread, the Triffids – mobile plants with lethal stingers and carnivorous appetites – seem set to wipe out the survivors.
I painted this canvas after reading the book by John Wyndham. In the story they escape London and head down to East Sussex, but the triffids had already ventured across the Downs of Sussex. I thought the Triffids on Brighton & Hove beach would make an interesting picture with a burning sky and the old burnt out West Pier in the background, with the 1980s mini series variation of the Triffids roaming the beach in search of its next victim.
