This Yokai originated in Chinese folklore, specifically the 2nd century Shenyi Jing (Classic of Divine Marvels). It was introduced to Japan through its inclusion in the 1712 Wakan Sansaizure (illustrated SIno-Japanese Encyclopaedia of the Three Realms). That book provides the Japanese reading Yamawaro for its name, elaborating that it resembles a ten year old boy, is capable of human speech, and has a taste for roast crab. Over the years, alternative spellings and pronunciations emerged.
